Fostering Positive School Culture: The Role of Leadership
Ms. Snehal Pinto started the conversation by sharing her insights on how a positive school culture is essential for student and teacher success. She emphasized that a healthy school culture is built on mutual respect, understanding, and shared values. "Positive school culture enables a sense of belonging," she said, highlighting that it impacts students and staff. Pinto also pointed out that leaders must "model the behavior they wish to see" and lead by example. A consistent, visible leadership presence is essential for maintaining the school's ethos. She explained that visible leadership is especially important in India’s diverse educational landscape. Pinto’s family has been practicing site-based leadership for over 40 years, which she believes has helped foster camaraderie and empowerment within school communities. “Leaders must stay connected with their teachers and students, and it is through these connections that a positive school culture thrives,” she stated.
The Importance of Student Leadership and Ownership
Mr. Sachin Vats of Gurukul The School shared a powerful insight into the role of student leadership in building a strong school culture. In his school, the “Master of Duty” program empowers students to take responsibility for their actions and tasks, encouraging ownership of their work. Additionally, his school runs a peer educator program called “Wevolve” focused on mental health, where students themselves take the lead in offering support to their peers. Teachers provide logistical support, but students manage the program, ensuring confidentiality and addressing issues like bullying, loneliness, and stress.Vats emphasized the significance of trust and clarity within school leadership. “It’s essential for school leaders to be approachable and ensure that the entire school community – from management to students – understands and is working toward the same vision,” he explained. He also added that leadership should be flexible enough to evolve with the needs of both students and teachers, with clarity and ownership being key elements of a positive school culture.
Teacher Empowerment: The Foundation of School Culture
Ms. Shalini Jaiswal from Maple Bear South Asia stressed the importance of teacher satisfaction in creating a thriving school culture. She described teachers as the “pillars” of any school, and their well-being is directly linked to the overall atmosphere within the school. She explained that when teachers feel valued and supported, they are more likely to bring energy and enthusiasm into their classrooms, positively influencing their students.
Jaiswal also highlighted the importance of upskilling teachers, particularly in the post-COVID era when technology has become an integral part of the learning environment. Maple Bear took a significant step by introducing MapleID, an initiative that offers teachers access to online courses for professional development. “Teachers need to continuously upgrade their skillsets to keep pace with changing generations of students,” she said, underlining that investing in teacher development leads to long-term benefits for students and the school community.
Collaboration: The Key to Nurturing a Positive School Culture
Ms. Rohini Aima of Jammu Sanskriti School pointed out that building a positive school culture requires collaboration between various stakeholders, including teachers, students, and parents. She noted that fostering strong, positive relationships between these groups leads to a cohesive school environment. Aima also spoke about how technology, particularly AI, can be a powerful tool in enhancing communication between all parties and making the school environment more interconnected. One particularly inspiring initiative shared by Aima was the “Library on Wheels” program, which helped bring educational resources to students in remote areas, such as the borders of Kashmir. The project enabled students to interact with rural children, share stories, and build empathy through these cross-community engagements. “This collaboration not only empowered students but also positively impacted the parents, who were thrilled to see such activities fostering community spirit,” Aima explained.
The Role of Technology and AI in Shaping Future Education
As the discussion concluded, the panelists agreed that AI and technology will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of education. However, they emphasized that while technology can enhance school operations, leadership, grounded in empathy, clarity, and empowerment, ultimately fosters a positive school culture. From creating strong connections between school communities to ensuring that teachers and students have the tools they need to succeed, the panelists left the audience with a clear message: the future of education depends on visionary leadership that empowers everyone in the school ecosystem.
The North Educators’ Summit 2024 was an essential reminder that leadership is not just about managing the day-to-day – it’s about nurturing a culture that inspires and empowers every individual in the school community to thrive.
