Meghalaya’s First Eklavya Model Residential School Welcomes Students: CM Urges Them to Value the Opportunity
The state of Meghalaya has taken a historic step in education with the inauguration of its first Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) at Pahamsyiem in Ri-Bhoi district. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma officially launched the academic session, extending gratitude to the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and the Centre for supporting the state’s efforts to strengthen education infrastructure, particularly for tribal communities in remote areas.
The EMRS initiative, which began in 1997-98, aims to provide quality education to Scheduled Tribe (ST) children from remote regions. Speaking at the inaugural programme, CM Sangma highlighted the broader purpose of education.

The first batch of the Meghalaya EMRS saw nearly 2,000 applications, out of which only a select few students were chosen. CM Sangma addressed the students directly, describing them as the “true guests of honour” and urging them to appreciate the opportunity.
“I urge all of you to value this opportunity, commit yourselves fully to your studies, and embrace the education you receive here,” he said, emphasizing the importance of dedication and responsibility in making the most of this unique chance.

As part of the programme, the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for a Synthetic Athletic Track at Pahamsyiem. The project, managed by the State Sports Council, aims to enhance sports infrastructure and provide better training facilities for young athletes in Ri-Bhoi district.
“Our approach is inclusive: development is for all regions, tribes, and communities. It is not selective,” CM Sangma said, urging people to move beyond divisive factors and recognise the progress being made across Meghalaya.
