University of Queensland and IIT Delhi Open Applications for Joint PhD Programme 2026: A Gateway to Global Research Excellence

A Prestigious Collaboration for Global Research

In a remarkable step towards advancing international research collaboration, the University of Queensland (UQ), Australia, and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) have officially opened Expressions of Interest (EoI) for their Joint Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Programme, commencing in July 2026.

This unique academic partnership offers PhD aspirants the chance to pursue cutting-edge research under the joint supervision of faculty members from both institutions, while experiencing the diverse academic environments of India and Australia. The program stands as a model of transnational education, integrating academic excellence, cultural exchange, and global networking opportunities.

About the Joint PhD Programme

The UQ–IITD Joint PhD Programme provides candidates with an unparalleled opportunity to work on innovative research projects while benefiting from the resources and expertise of two globally reputed universities.

Students enrolled in the program will spend one year at UQ’s Brisbane campus and the remaining three years at IIT Delhi, gaining international exposure and access to world-class laboratories, libraries, and research facilities.

The joint supervision model ensures that students receive mentorship from both institutions, facilitating cross-border collaboration and promoting interdisciplinary research. Graduates of this program will be awarded a joint PhD degree, recognized by both universities—an achievement that significantly enhances their global academic and professional prospects.

Financial Support and Research Benefits

One of the most appealing aspects of this programme is the comprehensive financial support offered to students. The UQ–IITD Research Academy provides fellowships, research travel grants, and relocation assistance, ensuring that scholars can fully focus on their research without financial constraints.

Additionally, students have full access to academic and research resources at both universities, including state-of-the-art laboratories, advanced computing facilities, and interdisciplinary research centers.

Last year, every UQ–IITD PhD applicant was awarded a scholarship for up to four years (based on a full-time study load), underlining the institutions’ strong commitment to supporting research talent.

Research Areas and Industry Collaboration

The programme welcomes applications from candidates across a wide spectrum of disciplines, including Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), Humanities, and Social Sciences. This interdisciplinary approach encourages innovative problem-solving and fosters a holistic understanding of global challenges.

Adding to its industry relevance, the UQ–IITD Research Academy has partnered with The Weir Group, a global leader in mining technology, to launch a new PhD project focused on slurry transportation. Such collaborations not only expand the scope of applied research but also open pathways for students to engage directly with industry experts and real-world challenges.

Application Process and Deadlines

Expressions of Interest (EoIs) for the July 2026 intake can be submitted online until 7 PM (IST) on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, through the official website — uqiitd.org/study.

To assist prospective applicants, the academy has scheduled two online information sessions:

These sessions will provide detailed insights into the programme structure, eligibility requirements, funding opportunities, and the application process, helping candidates make informed decisions.

Yearly Admission Rounds

The UQ–IITD Joint PhD Programme accepts applications twice a year, following a structured timeline:

  • Round 1: Opens in February for July intake (same year).
  • Round 2: Opens in September for January intake (following year).

This biannual cycle allows greater flexibility for aspiring researchers to align their academic schedules with the program’s intake windows.

Eligibility and Admission Insights

While specific eligibility criteria vary by research area, applicants are generally expected to demonstrate strong academic performance, research aptitude, and alignment with the programme’s interdisciplinary focus. Candidates are encouraged to explore potential research topics and supervisors through the official website before submitting their EoI.

The selection process is rigorous and merit-based, assessing academic excellence, research potential, and the feasibility of proposed projects. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for further evaluation, including interviews and discussions with prospective supervisors from both institutions.

Global Exposure and Career Prospects

The joint PhD structure offers more than just academic qualifications—it provides global exposure, cross-cultural learning, and a platform for collaborative innovation.

By splitting their research tenure between India and Australia, students gain insight into two distinct academic ecosystems and benefit from the combined networks of IIT Delhi and UQ. Graduates are well-positioned for postdoctoral research, academic appointments, or industry leadership roles, making them globally competitive professionals in their fields.

A Vision for the Future of Research

The partnership between IIT Delhi and the University of Queensland reflects a shared commitment to fostering high-impact, globally relevant research. Through this Joint PhD Programme, the two institutions aim to develop future-ready scholars capable of addressing complex scientific, technological, and social challenges that transcend national boundaries.

By merging India’s growing research ecosystem with Australia’s innovative academic infrastructure, the UQ–IITD Joint PhD Programme continues to shape a new generation of scholars who can think globally, act collaboratively, and contribute meaningfully to the world of knowledge.
