UPSC Releases CSE 2024 Reserve List: 114 More Candidates Recommended
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has officially released the Consolidated Reserve List for the Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2024, recommending 114 additional candidates for appointment to various Central Services. This announcement, published on the UPSC’s official website — upsc.gov.in, marks the completion of the 2024 recruitment cycle and ensures that all notified vacancies are now filled.
According to the Commission, the recommendation includes 94 candidates from the General category, 5 from the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), 13 from the Other Backward Classes (OBC), and one each from the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) categories. These candidates will now join the ranks of India’s most prestigious services, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and several Central Services, Group ‘A’ and Group ‘B’.
Vacancies Distributed Across India’s Premier Services
The Civil Services Examination 2024 had announced a total of 1,129 vacancies, distributed across multiple services. These included:
- 180 posts for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS)
- 55 posts for the Indian Foreign Service (IFS)
- 147 posts for the Indian Police Service (IPS)
- 605 positions across various Central Services, Group ‘A’
- 142 posts under Group ‘B’ Services
Earlier this year, on April 22, 2025, the UPSC declared the final results of CSE 2024, recommending 1,009 candidates for appointment. The current list of 114 additional names from the reserve list ensures that the remaining 120 vacancies are now covered, thus closing the recruitment process for the year.
Appointments to Be Communicated by DoPT
As per the official statement, the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) will handle the next stage of the process by directly communicating appointment details to the newly recommended candidates. The selection and appointments were made in strict accordance with the provisions of Rules 20(4) and 20(5) of the Civil Services Examination Rules, 2024, following a formal request from the DoPT to the Commission.
These rules govern the procedure for recommending candidates from the reserve list in cases where vacancies remain unfilled after the initial round of appointments. This mechanism ensures that no position goes vacant while maintaining merit-based and category-wise representation across services.
Candidature of 15 Candidates Under Provisional Status
The UPSC has clarified that the candidature of 15 candidates among the newly recommended names remains provisional, pending verification of essential documents and eligibility criteria. This standard procedure ensures transparency and compliance with recruitment regulations before final appointments are issued.
Once the DoPT completes its verification and correspondence, the newly selected candidates will receive official intimation regarding their service allocation, training schedules, and joining formalities.
A Year-Long Selection Journey
The UPSC CSE 2024 was a rigorous, multi-stage selection process spanning nearly a year. It began with the Preliminary Examination held on June 16, 2024, followed by the Mains Examination conducted from September 20 to September 29, 2024. The final Personality Test (Interview) phase was conducted between January 7 and April 17, 2025.
The final results, announced on April 22, 2025, saw top performers from across the country secure coveted positions in India’s elite administrative services. The release of the reserve list now officially concludes the 2024 examination cycle.
Ensuring Representation and Fair Opportunity
UPSC’s decision to release the reserve list reflects its ongoing commitment to fairness, transparency, and equal opportunity in India’s most competitive examination. The Consolidated Reserve List acts as a contingency mechanism to fill remaining vacancies when some recommended candidates do not join or when additional posts become available after the final results.
By maintaining this reserve, UPSC ensures that no administrative position remains vacant, and that deserving candidates receive opportunities based on merit. This practice also upholds the principle of representation across categories, ensuring equitable inclusion of candidates from diverse social and economic backgrounds.
