Yog Sankalp Initiative Brings Mindfulness to Bal Bharati Schools

‘Yog Sankalp’: Reimagining Holistic Education Through Mindfulness in Bal Bharati Schools

In an era increasingly defined by academic pressure, digital immersion, and the relentless pace of modern life, the role of education is being re-examined with renewed urgency. Beyond intellectual attainment, schools are now expected to nurture emotional resilience, physical well-being, and ethical awareness among young learners. It is within this evolving educational landscape that the Child Education Society (CES), the apex body governing the Bal Bharati Public Schools, has introduced Yog Sankalp,  a thoughtfully conceived initiative aimed at integrating yoga into the daily consciousness of students across its network.

Formally inaugurated on 21 May 2026 at Bal Bharati Public School, Ganga Ram Hospital Marg, the programme marks the beginning of a month-long nationwide observance of yoga across all 26 Bal Bharati institutions. Conceived in collaboration with Mokshayatan Yog Sansthan, the initiative will culminate on 21 June with the celebration of International Yoga Day, aligning seamlessly with global efforts to promote holistic health and well-being.

At its core, Yog Sankalp is more than a ceremonial exercise. It represents a deliberate and philosophical commitment to reorient education towards a balance between the mind and body, intellect and intuition, performance and peace.

A Vision Rooted in Holistic Education

The theme of the initiative: “Yoga for Wellness, Wisdom and World Peace”, reflects a comprehensive understanding of education as a multidimensional pursuit. By situating yoga within the framework of both personal growth and global harmony, CES has sought to extend its relevance beyond physical fitness to encompass emotional equilibrium and ethical consciousness.

The inauguration ceremony itself embodied this ethos. The event commenced with the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp, accompanied by the chanting of Sanskrit shlokas, setting a tone of quiet reverence and introspection. The ambience, suffused with spiritual undertones, stood in contrast to the often utilitarian nature of school events, underscoring the deeper purpose of the initiative.

Students from Bal Bharati Public Schools, along with members of the Mokshayatan Yog Sansthan Ashram, presented a series of yoga demonstrations that blended discipline with artistic expression. These performances were not merely displays of physical agility but reflections of a practice that harmonises breath, movement and awareness.

Leadership and Legacy

The presence of key figures from both CES and Mokshayatan Yog Sansthan lent the occasion both gravitas and continuity. Child Education Society President Nikhil Channa addressed the gathering with a message that bridged past vision and present commitment. Paying tribute to the late Shri L. R. Channa, former President of CES, he acknowledged the foundational role played by earlier leadership in envisioning a healthier, more mindful India through the integration of yoga in education.

His call for a collective sankalp, a solemn resolve to make yoga a daily practice, was both aspirational and pragmatic. It recognised that institutional initiatives can only succeed when internalised by individuals.

Equally significant was the contribution of Acharya Pratishtha, Director of Mokshayatan Yog Sansthan, who served as the keynote speaker. Her discourse moved beyond abstract philosophy to offer tangible insights into the role of yoga in cultivating happiness, a concept she described as the ultimate goal of human life.

Guiding the audience through simple yet effective practices such as neck and eye exercises, laughter techniques (attahas) and gratitude meditation, she demonstrated how yoga can be seamlessly integrated into daily routines without requiring elaborate infrastructure or time commitments.

The Pedagogical Significance of Yoga

The integration of yoga within school education is not a novel concept in India, yet its implementation has often remained sporadic or symbolic. What distinguishes Yog Sankalp is its structured, sustained and system-wide approach.

By extending the programme across all 26 Bal Bharati Public Schools, CES has signalled its intent to institutionalise yoga rather than treat it as an occasional activity. This is particularly important in the context of contemporary schooling, where students frequently grapple with stress, anxiety, sedentary lifestyles and diminished attention spans.

Yoga, when practised consistently, offers a scientifically supported means of addressing these challenges. It enhances concentration, improves posture and respiratory health, regulates emotional responses, and fosters a sense of inner calm. More importantly, it cultivates mindfulness, the ability to remain present and attentive in an increasingly distracted world.

From a pedagogical standpoint, such attributes are invaluable. Learning is not merely a cognitive process; it is deeply influenced by emotional and physiological states. By promoting balance and well-being, yoga creates conditions conducive to more effective and meaningful learning.

Community Participation and Collective Engagement

One of the notable features of the inaugural event was the breadth of participation. The gathering included not only school administrators and students but also parents, alumni, members of the Parent-Teacher Association and representatives from the collaborating institution.

This inclusive approach reflects an understanding that education does not occur in isolation. The values and practices cultivated within schools are reinforced or undermined by the environments in which students live.

By involving the wider community, Yog Sankalp seeks to extend its impact beyond the classroom. It encourages families to adopt healthier lifestyles, promotes intergenerational learning and fosters a shared commitment to well-being.

The welcome address by Principal Deepak Dua of the host school encapsulated this perspective. Emphasising the importance of “healthy habits, mindful living and inner growth,” he highlighted the role of yoga as a unifying practice capable of bridging individual and collective aspirations.

Bridging Tradition and Modernity

Another noteworthy dimension of the initiative lies in its ability to reconcile tradition with contemporary relevance. Yoga, deeply rooted in India’s ancient philosophical and spiritual heritage, is here being presented not as a relic of the past but as a practical tool for navigating modern challenges.

In a globalised world where educational models often prioritise technological proficiency and economic competitiveness, such initiatives serve as reminders of the enduring value of indigenous knowledge systems.

At the same time, Yog Sankalp avoids the pitfalls of cultural insularity by framing yoga in universal terms, as a pathway to wellness, wisdom, and peace. This inclusive framing ensures that the practice remains accessible and meaningful to diverse audiences.

Towards a Culture of Mindful Living

The concluding vote of thanks delivered by Ms Asha Prabhakar, Convenor of the CES Sports Council, reiterated the organisation’s commitment to embedding yoga meaningfully within school life. Her remarks underscored an important shift from viewing yoga as an extracurricular activity to recognising it as an integral component of holistic education.

This shift is both timely and necessary. As societies confront rising mental health concerns, lifestyle-related illnesses, and social fragmentation, the need for practices that promote balance, empathy and self-awareness has never been greater.

Educational institutions, as formative spaces, are uniquely positioned to lead this transformation.

Embedding Yoga in the Fabric of School Life

As Yog Sankalp unfolds over the coming weeks, culminating in the observance of International Yoga Day, its success will ultimately be measured not by the scale of its events but by the depth of its impact.

Will students internalise the discipline and mindfulness that yoga seeks to cultivate? Will teachers integrate their principles into their pedagogical practices? Will families embrace it as a shared lifestyle choice?

These questions will determine whether the initiative remains a well-intentioned programme or evolves into a sustained movement.

What is clear, however, is that the Child Education Society has taken a significant step towards redefining the purpose of education. By foregrounding well-being alongside academic achievement, it has reaffirmed a timeless truth: that education, at its best, nurtures not only the intellect but the whole human being.

In doing so, Yog Sankalp offers a compelling vision of what schools can become, spaces where learning is not merely about acquiring knowledge, but about cultivating harmony within oneself and with the world.
