IIT Hyderabad Opens Applications for SURE Internship 2026: Eligibility, Fellowship, and Key Details

India’s premier technical institutes have long played a pivotal role in nurturing the nation’s research culture. Among them, Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad has consistently distinguished itself through initiatives that open the doors of advanced research to young scholars across the country. One such initiative - the Summer Undergraduate Research Exposure (SURE) Internship has once again invited applications for its 2026 edition, offering students a valuable opportunity to experience the rigours and excitement of academic research at a leading IIT.

The SURE Internship programme is designed to expose talented undergraduate and postgraduate students from institutions other than IIT Hyderabad to the institute’s vibrant research ecosystem. Through this initiative, selected interns will work closely with faculty mentors, explore cutting-edge laboratories, and gain insight into how scientific inquiry and innovation unfold within one of India’s fastest-growing technological universities.

A Gateway to Research for Aspiring Scholars

The SURE Internship has emerged as a prestigious summer programme that allows students to immerse themselves in hands-on research projects across disciplines ranging from engineering and design to natural sciences and liberal arts. By offering mentorship from experienced faculty members and access to advanced facilities, the programme seeks to cultivate analytical thinking, scientific curiosity, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

For students considering careers in research, academia, or innovation-driven industries, such exposure can prove transformative. Internships like SURE bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world problem solving, enabling participants to understand how theoretical knowledge translates into experimental and applied research.

For the 2026 cycle, the institute has announced a total of 250 internship seats, including 100 positions reserved exclusively for women, reflecting a conscious effort to encourage greater participation of female students in research and technology fields.

Application Timeline and Key Dates

The application window for the SURE Internship 2026 opened on February 28, 2026, and will remain open until March 10, 2026. Interested students must submit their applications through the official online portal of the institute. Offline submissions or applications sent via email are not accepted.

Following the application phase, the tentative timeline for the programme is as follows:

  • Application deadline: March 10, 2026
  • Announcement of results: Around April 15, 2026
  • Internship commencement: May 15, 2026
  • Programme conclusion: July 14, 2026

The internship duration is flexible within this window, allowing students to participate for a minimum of one month and a maximum of two months depending on their availability and research commitments.

Fellowship and Financial Support

To support participants during their research stint, IIT Hyderabad provides a modest fellowship. Students who complete the full two-month internship will receive a stipend of ₹15,000. Those opting for shorter durations will receive compensation proportionate to their time spent in the programme.

The fellowship structure is as follows:

  • Two months: ₹15,000 total
  • One and a half months: ₹10,000
  • One month: ₹7,500

Interns will also be provided accommodation in the institute’s student hostels, allowing them to experience campus life and collaborate closely with fellow researchers. However, participants will be required to cover their own mess or dining charges during the internship period.

Eligibility Criteria for Applicants

The SURE Internship is open exclusively to students enrolled at institutions other than IIT Hyderabad. This approach ensures that the programme benefits students who may not otherwise have access to the institute’s extensive research infrastructure.

Eligible applicants include:

  • First-year MSc students in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, or Biology
  • First-year MA students
  • Second or third-year BTech or BDes students from any branch
  • Third or fourth-year students in Integrated BTech-MTech programmes

Beyond academic qualification, applicants must demonstrate strong academic performance. Specifically, candidates must be among the top 20 per cent of their class, based on CGPA or percentage scores across previous years of study. This ranking must be formally certified by the head of their institution or principal at the time of application.

Additionally, applicants must meet the following conditions:

  • Be a full-time, regular student at the time of application
  • Continue their full-time enrolment throughout the internship
  • Be available to work full-time for at least one month

Part-time or remote internships are not permitted under the programme guidelines, emphasising the importance of immersive, on-campus research engagement.

Selection Process

The selection procedure for the SURE Internship follows a two-stage evaluation model designed to identify candidates with strong academic potential and research aptitude.

1. Preliminary Screening

All submitted applications undergo an initial review to evaluate eligibility and academic merit. At this stage, factors such as grade performance, academic rank, and supporting documentation are assessed.

2. Online Interview

Candidates shortlisted in the preliminary stage may be invited for an online interview conducted by the relevant department or the assigned faculty mentor. The interview helps assess the applicant’s research interest, conceptual understanding, and readiness to undertake a research project.

During the selection process, evaluators typically consider several parameters, including:

  • Consistency in academic performance
  • Participation in extracurricular and co-curricular activities
  • Achievements in competitive examinations such as Olympiads or the National Talent Search Examination (NTSE)
  • Demonstrated curiosity and motivation during the interview

The final decision rests with the institute’s authorities, and their verdict on selection is considered final.

Notification of Results

Successful applicants will be notified through email once the selection process concludes. In addition, the final list of selected interns will be published on the official webpage of the institute’s Student Research Council (SRC).

Candidates who are not selected will not receive individual notifications, and the institute does not entertain further correspondence regarding the selection outcome.

Experiencing Research at IIT Hyderabad

Participating in the SURE Internship offers far more than a stipend or a certificate, it provides students with a rare opportunity to experience the research culture of one of India’s premier institutes of technology.

Founded in 2008, IIT Hyderabad has rapidly gained recognition for its emphasis on interdisciplinary research, innovation, and technological advancement. The institute consistently ranks among India’s leading engineering institutions and has built a reputation for cutting-edge work in fields such as artificial intelligence, materials science, robotics, and design.

For interns, this environment can be intellectually stimulating. Students work alongside faculty members, doctoral researchers, and peers from diverse academic backgrounds, gaining exposure to advanced equipment, experimental techniques, and collaborative research methodologies.

Such experiences often help participants refine their academic interests, identify potential research pathways, and build networks that may influence future postgraduate or doctoral pursuits.

Why Research Internships Matter

In an era where innovation drives economic and technological progress, undergraduate research opportunities have become increasingly significant. Programmes like the SURE Internship allow students to:

  • Develop independent research skills
  • Strengthen their academic profiles
  • Gain mentorship from experienced researchers
  • Explore interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving
  • Enhance their prospects for higher studies and global academic opportunities

For many students, a summer research internship becomes the first step toward pursuing advanced degrees or careers in academia, research laboratories, and innovation-driven industries.

A Valuable Opportunity for Young Researchers

With limited seats and a competitive selection process, the SURE Internship at IIT Hyderabad remains a highly sought-after opportunity for students eager to explore the world of research. The programme’s blend of academic rigour, mentorship, and practical exposure makes it an ideal platform for young scholars to deepen their understanding of their chosen disciplines.

As the March 10 deadline approaches, eligible students across India have a limited window to apply. For those with a passion for discovery and a desire to learn within one of the country’s leading technological institutions, the SURE Internship 2026 could serve as a defining academic experience, one that shapes not only their summer but potentially their entire research journey.
