Sonia Kapoor: Fostering Inclusive Learning and Digital Integration
As the head of Atomic Energy Central School No. 2 in Mumbai, Sonia Kapoor has been instrumental in creating a student-centered, inclusive academic environment. Her efforts are focused on enabling group learning and ensuring that life skills are an integral part of everyday education.
Kapoor highlighted the supportive culture within her organisation, which she says empowers innovation. Among her key initiatives:
- Development of teaching-learning materials that support club-based, peer group learning
- Integration of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) into regular academic activities
- Promotion of life-skills education as a vital component of daily classroom interaction
Her approach ensures that learning goes beyond textbooks, preparing students not just academically but also emotionally and socially for the challenges of the real world.
Dr. Sandipan Jagdale: Making Music Accessible to All
With over 23 years of experience in music education, Dr. Sandipan Jagdale from Dayanand College of Arts in Latur has played a pivotal role in reinstating the value of music as a mainstream subject. His philosophy centers on the transformative power of art in shaping a student’s outlook and emotional well-being.
A notable highlight of his work includes:
- Authoring a Braille music textbook, designed specifically for visually challenged students, making music education more inclusive
- Mentoring over 27 students who have successfully entered the entertainment industry
- Promoting student involvement in extra-curricular and personality development activities
“Art is deeply satisfying and can foster a positive outlook on life,” says Jagdale. His focus on holistic development is evident in the way he combines music with life guidance, helping students discover purpose and direction.
Dr. Shaikh Mohammad Waquioddin: Reducing Dropouts and Driving Rural Change
Working at a government school in Ardhapur village in Nanded, Dr. Shaikh Mohammad Waquioddin Shaikh Hamidoddin has over 28 years of teaching experience in rural Maharashtra. He has taken significant steps to combat school dropout rates, especially among girls, and to address barriers to education in under-resourced communities.
Noticing that many girls dropped out due to the school’s distance from their homes (3–4 km), Dr. Shaikh initiated a satellite classroom model:
- He rented rooms within local communities, offering a more accessible learning space for girls.
- The initiative led to a sharp decline in dropout rates within just one year.
- It later expanded to include younger students, drawing strong support from local residents.
Dr. Shaikh’s dedication also extends beyond academics. He:
- Led menstrual hygiene awareness campaigns among adolescent girls
- Partnered with NGOs to distribute sanitary napkins, ensuring health and dignity for students
- Continues to advocate for equity in education, particularly for underprivileged children
“Children in ZP schools often come from very challenging circumstances. I believe it is my duty to help them build better futures,” he stated.
National Recognition on Teachers’ Day
These three educators exemplify the diverse ways in which teachers can impact students’ lives—from creating inclusive environments and developing accessible learning tools, to establishing grassroots solutions for rural education challenges.
On September 5, as the nation celebrates Teachers’ Day, these changemakers will be felicitated in New Delhi for their extraordinary contributions. The National Teachers’ Award serves not only as a personal honour but also as a beacon for the entire teaching community, emphasizing that passion, innovation, and empathy are the true foundations of transformative education.
Conclusion: Teaching with Purpose, Changing Lives
The stories of Sonia Kapoor, Dr. Sandipan Jagdale, and Dr. Shaikh Waquioddin illustrate that impactful teaching goes far beyond the classroom. Whether it's through technology, music, or community outreach, their commitment is helping reshape India's educational landscape—one student, one initiative, and one breakthrough at a time.
Their recognition is a powerful reminder that teachers are architects of society, and when equipped with vision and support, they can build a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
